South of the Bay of Naples lies Capri, an island known for its dazzling beauty, luxurious atmosphere, and rich history. Surrounded by the azure Mediterranean, Capri has attracted travelers from all over the world for centuries – from emperors to artists. But how do you get to Capri, and how do you travel around the island once you arrive at the picturesque Marina Grande harbor?

Ferry to Capri – The Only Way
To reach Capri, you must travel by boat. Ferries run year-round from Naples and Sorrento, and during the summer season, you can also take ferries from smaller towns along the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano and Amalfi. Tourists and visitors are not allowed to bring cars to Capri, so we always prefer the smaller, high-speed ferries. The boat ride itself is an experience, offering fantastic views of the coastline. Sit back with an aperitivo and enjoy the journey.
Choosing the Right Ferry:
From Naples: Molo Beverello, the port for high-speed ferries, is a short taxi ride from both Naples airport and the train station. Shuttle buses also operate between the airport, train station, and port, making it easy to reach. Ferries run year-round but may be canceled in bad weather. The trip to Capri takes between 40 and 50 minutes.
From Sorrento: Ferries run year-round from the beautiful town of Sorrento, south of Naples. They are more frequent in summer and take between 20 and 30 minutes to reach Capri.
From the Amalfi Coast: During the summer, ferries operate between several small towns on the Amalfi Coast, such as Positano and Amalfi. These routes start in April and run until October. The ports in these towns are smaller and seasonal, making them more susceptible to cancellations due to bad weather. If there are strong winds or high waves, ferries from Naples and Sorrento are more reliable.

Ferry Schedules and Ticket Tips
Several ferry operators serve the Bay of Naples, including SNAV, NLG, and Caremar. We recommend checking www.naplesbayferry.com for schedules. Be sure to select the correct dates, as schedules may change. You can also buy tickets directly from ferry companies on this site.
If you have suitcases, they require a separate ticket and will be stored at the back of the ferry.
Ticket booths can have long lines, especially in high season, so it's best to book in advance. Fast ferries fill up quickly in summer, and availability can be limited. We suggest using www.naplesbayferry.com to book directly with ferry operators. For day trips from the Amalfi Coast or nearby islands, we often buy tickets a few days in advance at the respective ports to secure a spot.
Avoid third-party sites that charge higher fees and often have outdated information.

Arriving at Marina Grande
All ferries dock at Marina Grande, Capri’s bustling harbor. Here, you’ll be greeted by a lively mix of people, taxis, buses, fishermen, restaurant hosts, and boat tour operators selling trips to caves and attractions. It’s chaotic but part of Capri’s unique charm.
From here, you have several options for getting around:
Bus
Small buses run regularly to Capri town and up to Anacapri. Updated information and bus time tables: https://www.capri.net/en/bus-schedule
They can be crowded, especially right after a ferry arrives.
If you have a lot of luggage, porters are recommended.
Taxi
The iconic open-top Capri taxis offer a unique ride.
Expect long queues after ferry arrivals. Instead of waiting in line, grab a coffee at one of the harbor cafés, relax, and watch the lively scene until the lines disappear.
Note that taxis can take you to Piazza Umberto I in Capri town, but they cannot enter the town itself due to its narrow streets and stairs. If you have a lot of luggage, use the porter service.
Funicolare
The most fun way to reach Capri town from Marina Grande.
Queues can be long right after ferry arrivals.
Tickets are purchased at the entrance.
Large suitcases require an extra ticket – consider using the porter service.

Getting Around Capri
Capri town is best explored on foot. The streets are narrow, and only small service vehicles are permitted. However, other parts of the island, such as Marina Piccola or Anacapri, are more accessible. To get around Capri, you can use:
Buses from Piazza Umberto I to Anacapri, Marina Piccola, or Faro di Punta Carena.
Taxis for a more comfortable ride.
From Marina Grande, you can also take boat tours to explore the island’s caves and hidden coves.
Capri is an island best enjoyed at a slow pace. Take your time, wander through charming streets, soak in the views, and let yourself be enchanted by this legendary island.
