Nocelle is a magical small village located 500 meters high above Positano, with only a few hundred permanent residents. The village is truly worth a visit, whether for a day trip or to stay for a few days in peaceful and romantic surroundings. Up here, it feels like time has stood still for a long time, a sleepy little village where houses are closely clustered together and vegetable gardens are terraced on the steep terrain. But how does one get from Positano to Nocelle?
BY FOOT - UP (OR DOWN) 1500 STEPS
In former times, one had to walk along stone steps from Positano to Nocelle, over 1500 steps up. Donkeys were used to carry goods up and down. The stairs are still here, and it can be a great hike, but remember there are 450 meters of stairs. Bring enough water to drink, wear good shoes, the old stone steps are slippery and steep. At the top of the stairs, you can find Lemon Point Positano, where you can reward yourself with a cold drink made from the famous Amalfi lemons.
BUS
Small buses run between Positano and Nocelle. The bus stops at several locations along Viale Pasitea in Positano and stops at the parking lot just before Nocelle, where all car traffic ceases. Further into Nocelle's stone-paved narrow streets and stairs, one must go on foot. The buses are very small and the road is narrow and winding. So, don't be surprised if you don't get a seat on the first or second bus. Remember, this bus is also used by locals. But the bus ride itself is fascinating, with a fantastic view over the sea and down toward Positano. Tickets cost a few euros and can be purchased at kiosks, like the one at Piazza di Mulini.
The small buses are labeled «Nocelle», the timetables are labeled as «Positano - Nocelle». The buses marked as "Interno Positano" do NOT go to Nocelle. These buses circulate in circles around the one-way streets of Positano.
CAR
If you are traveling by car, you can drive from Positano to Nocelle. Please note that the roads are very narrow and winding. As you approach the most challenging turns, give a couple of quick friendly honks on the horn, a sort of "Hey, hey, here I come!"-honk. Buses and small vans do the same, so if you hear a honk from the other side of a turn in front of you, slow down and find a spot to let traffic pass. And by all means, if you have a large car, park it in Positano and take the bus up. Fold in the mirrors of your car!
