Piazetta di Capri – the first place on Capri thousands of tourists meet every year. Piazetta, which means «the small square», is named Piazza Umberto I. It is a vibrant small square where the restaurants and bars lies side by side. And it is one of the most fashionable squares you can visit at Capri. If you arrive at Capri by taxi or La Funicolare, this will be your first glimpse of the city. There are always a lot of people here, regardless of the time of day, also because most streets lead to this square.
Piazza Umberto I is a perfect place to sit and watch all the people passing by, you can suddenly see a celebrity, or you can also just be completely fascinated by all of the people that pass by.
Glenn and I often have a guessing game when we sit at one of these cafes. We guess which country the different people come from, just because it’s so entertaining to watch people on vacation and how they (and we) behave.
The famous high-end shopping street, Via Camerelle, is also located right next to the square. Here all the design shops are lined up and the bouganvillas growing beautifully in between. They all have seductive windows whose only goal is to lure you inside.
The long, narrow streets of the city are charming even if you sometimes go in line. There are a lot of people here in high season. When the city streets only are 2 meters wide, there surely have to be a bit of congestion at times.
When you walk along these streets you will discover that store owners are incredibly proud if they have had a well-known celebrity visiting the store or eating at their restaurant. Then there are pictures on the walls outside, or along the brick walls. Even if it happened in the 60's, the pictures are still there on the wall.
